I've been hammered with the Honest Scrap Award!

I recently joined the gardening blog site, Blotanical, and have met many other bloggers across the country/world who love plants.  I really enjoy reading what others have to say about their gardens, even if I can't grow what they do because we live in different climates.  I love reading about others joy and love for their gardens.  I've only been on the site for a week or two, but have already found many favorites and others have "faved" me too.  One blog, The Violet Fern, caught my eye from the beginning and I quickly made it a fav for its wonderful content and ideas.  This morning, I wake up to an email from by blog comments and find that I have been hammered with the "Honest Scrap" award by her.  It's a fun little blog post award that helps other get to know a bit more about you.  So, here goes!

According to other posts the Honest Scrap Award "rules" are:
(Remember RULES ARE MEANT TO BE BROKEN.)

  1. Brag about the award.
  2. Include the name of the blogger who gave you the award and link back to that blogger.
  3. Choose a minimum of seven blogs that you find brilliant in content or design.
  4. Show their names and links and leave a comment informing them that they were prized with this award.
  5. List at least ten honest things about yourself. (TEN?!?)
The honor is all mine! (Is that bragging for rule #1?)

1.  I'm slightly very in love with the color Purple.  It's soothing yet stimulating all at once!  Its been my favorite color my whole life.  If I didn't live in a house full of males, I'd prolly paint every room in a different shade of purple, plum, or lavender. (okay...maybe not that far, but I REALLY love purple!)

2.  I'm not only a gardener, but also a florist.  My first real job was working in a floral shop.  I was taken under the wing of an amazing woman and learned so much from her.  I branched out into silks and dried, where I started my own business working with an interior designer.  Together, we install interior Christmas decor and floral arrangements for her clients.  I also still do weddings for people I know.

3.  I named my business "Madblooms" for two reasons. 1) I love creating floral arrangements that were "Outside the box" or a little wild and crazy. and 2) I do my best work when I'm mad, angry or frustrated.  Creativity is my stress outlet.  I've found that gardening gives me the same stress relief...there's nothing better than the satisfaction of pulling weeds out of your garden when you've had a bad day!

4.  I've known my husband since we were in Junior High.  He said he was going to marry me after a date we had in High School.  (I thought, "Yeah right!")  A few separate roads traveled later, our paths crossed again in 2004. We got married in June 2006, and have been happy ever since.  Together, we have 5 boys.  I have 1 from a previous relationship, he has 3, and our 1 and only attempt at a girl turned out to be another boy.  What-a-ya-do?

5.  I owe my love of plants to my grandmothers, Alice and Marie.  Both had beautiful gardens and as a child, I picked up their love and passion for their plants.  I miss them both dearly!

6.  I take my camera everywhere I go.  I'm in love with my camera!

7.  My dream job is to work at the Houston Zoo designing/ taking care of the plants on the grounds.  My other dream job is to work at Moody Gardens in Galveston, TX taking care of their rain forest pyramid and grounds.

8.  I love Martha Stewart.  I think she's done a lot for the floral/garden industry.  And if I had all the time in the world, and the kids were perfect angels, and my husband went on a permanent hunting/fishing trip, my house would look a lot like hers!  (None of the above things will ever happen, so my house will probably never look like hers.)  A girl can dream though!

9.  I HATE cooking!  Baking is great.  Crock pots are my friend.  Stove tops stress me out.  Seriously though, food just defeats me with the whole wifely duty thing.  I just don't find the joy in spending HOURS in the kitchen cooking to have it gone in MINUTES!  Thank God I married a man who can cook.  I'd prolly starve otherwise!

10.  I love chocolate!  My favorite in Dove milk chocolate.  Second to that is Hershey's with Almonds.

Okay, 10 things about me down.  7 blogs of great content and design coming right up!
  1. Offshoots - because I like her advice on plant care.
  2. Empty Nest Gardens and Quilts - because I love the photos of the Dale Chihuly art she has posted.  (I'm a huge fan after seeing one of his displays in Ohio a few years ago!)
  3. Liz and the Professor - because I'm jealous of all the tropicals they post.
  4. Kapachino - because she needs a post for NaBloPoMo.
  5. Terrafarmer - because it's neat to see plants from around the world.
  6. Jeans Garden - for her kind greeting when I joined Blotanical!  She has a neat blog!
  7. ??? I'm breaking this rule.  I'm not going to be the crazy plant lady and stalk down someone I haven't even spoken to online, and everyone else I know has a family blog with kiddos that I don't think they want completely public, or they have already done this blog post.  So, 6 it is!

This was fun!  Thanks again to Violet Fern for awarding me!

  2. I enjoyed your list. We live in Austin and have three boys. I can only imagine how busy you are....Ours are 17, 13 and 11. I think boys are a lot of fun and wouldn't have it any other way. If we had another one, I'm sure it would be a boy! Your arrangements are beautiful! I love the ones floating. That seems to be a popular camera to have. I see it on a lot of blog sites. I will have to check it out...maybe for Christmas :)

  3. I enjoyed your scrap - I would be in love with that camera, too. It was great learning more about you. Your floral arrangements are beautiful - I like that they are "out of the box." What a fun career but I am sure it can be very stressful. Hmmm, five boys and Martha Stewart - a challenge for sure!

  5. Thank you all! I do highly recommend the Canon Rebel for a camera...very user friendly and easy to understand for the inexperienced photographer, yet it has a lot of bells and whistles to take your photos to the next level.

I start my first Christmas install in a week and a half...that's the most stressful time of year for me. But I think this year is going to be more laid back since the economy is down. People aren't spending the big bucks for decorating. After 6+ years of doing it, that's OK with me!

And no, my home is NEVER going to look like Martha's, but I do love all her ideas anyway!

Thank again for all the comments!
